| |
| 1. For what applications can the Mobile DataVault FastRestore SE be used? |
| |
This solution was intended for backup and disaster recovery for small and medium enterprises. It is a 100 percent replacement for small and midrange tape drives.
It uses shock-protected hard disk drives that are safe for rotating daily and offsite archival, just like tape. By making hard drives durable, we've solved the big reason hard drives could not replace tape in the past. |
| |
| 2. Is this system available in rackmount or internal configurations? |
| |
Yes, we offer customized rackmount solutions as an alternative to the desktop configuration. We also offer an internal docking bay that you can install in a rackmount chassis or server. Contact us for details. |
| |
| 3. I like the concept of using the hard drives, but have a need for 1 Terabyte of capacity — do you have solutions for this? |
| |
Yes, we have options that allow you to achieve Terabytes of capacity with our rugged portable drives. These solutions are much easier to use and more economical than large tape libraries. Please Contact us for more information. |
| |
| 4. Has this product been reviewed by any magazines? |
| |
PC Magazine gave this product a 4-star rating in its review! MacAddict featured the product in its July 2004 print copy, in the Muscle Mac feature. It has also been featured in The Inquirer, InfoStor, and other industry publications. |
| |
| 5. How can I restore data with this product? |
| |
First, since this product uses hard drives, there is a major performance benefit over any tape-based solution up to 2500% faster than tape.
The other benefit of this solution is its versatility in the ways you can restore data. You can, of course, restore via the desktop chassis that's included. But, there is another way to restore files. Let's say you have a special, secure network that the chassis is not connected to. You can plug Olixir's USB 2.0, Firewire, or SATA cables into the back of the individual drive to restore data via another server or laptop on the secure network! The bottom line is that with our product you can restore to just about any platform. The cables are purchased separately through Olixir; Contact us to order cables. |

| |
| 6. How reliable is this product? |
| |
We back this product with a three-year warranty because we have gone to great length to make this product ultra-reliable. We use the highest quality internal hard drives we are extremely selective with the internal bare drives used in our product and have rejected most bare drives in the market for use in our product with our stringent selection criteria. Second, shock protection eliminates the most common failure of hard drives see the question below Why is shock protection important for hard drives to learn more about this.
We have thoroughly tested this product at numerous beta sites in 2003 and have a large customer base -- we are pleased to say that we have had spectacular success with the product after nearly one year in the field with a warranty return rate that is close to zero. |
| |
| 7. Is this product expandable for higher capacity? |
| |
Absolutely. This is one of the best financial benefits of this product. You can use this product with higher capacity drives in the future, or daisy-chain the chassis via a second Firewire port on the back of the chassis to add capacity. This is a virtually infinitely scalable solution, whereas tape is not upward expandable with higher capacity media. Many of our customers have saved thousands of dollars by only having to purchase more portable drives when more capacity was needed, rather than a brand new expensive tape drive (and the learning curve that goes along with a new backup solution is eliminated). |
| |
| 8. What makes the Mobile DataVault FastRestore SE different than tape drives and other hard drive-based backup solutions? |
|
Today, many enterprises spend too much on backup and disaster recovery because they use hard drives for the backup and tape drives for disaster recovery/offsite archival. We have made it possible to use hard drives safely for BOTH backup and disaster recovery/offsite archiving by shock protecting our hard drives these drives are safe for rotation and offsite archiving. You will be hard pressed to find a faster and simpler solution for backup and disaster recovery as our solution is 100% hard drive based the hassles and headaches of tape are completely eliminated.
Other benefits of our solution compared to tape include:
- Up to 2500 percent faster restoration time.
- More capacity per media we offer up to 400/800 GB portable drives. Most tapes are 110 GB native or less! The benefit here is less media to deal with and you won't have to worry about defective tape preventing a proper restore.
- 3 to 10 times faster backup.
- No cleaning required.
- Random access instead of serial access random access is much more reliable.
- Lot less incidence of problems later one small defect in a tape can render it useless.

| 9. Why is shock protection for hard drives important? |
|
This question is best answered with the following statement from Independent Technology Services, Inc. which states:
Rough handling accounts for more hard disk drive damage than all other factors combined.
In fact, most hard drives can't take even an inch of drop. Fujitsu Corporation included the following warning in a recent warranty statement on its hard disk drives:
A drop onto a hard surface from as little as ¼-inch (6 mm) can cause defects on the surface of the drive, so extreme care must be exercised when handling disk product.
It's no wonder that many popular external drives, such as Maxtor's 5000DV, provide the warning:
Do not bump, jar, or drop the drive.
Olixir solved this problem by developing a revolutionary 1200G shock-protected external drive. This drive offers over 450 percent more durability than most other external 3.5 external drives and is the most durable and reliable known high-capacity 3.5 external hard drive in the world.
Even though this drive is shock protected, it is about 40 percent smaller than most popular 3.5 external hard drives (about the size of a VHS tape). It will stand vertically or can be stacked.
Note: For applications requiring military-grade shock protection, we offer the Mobile DataVault 2LX, which exceeds MIL-STD-810F transit drop test requirements. |
| |
| 10. How much shock protection do the hard drives in the Mobile DataVault FastRestore SE offer? |
| |
The external drives used in the Mobile DataVault FastRestore SE offer 1200G shock protection, which make them completely safe for daily rotation and offsite archival. They are the most durable and reliable known high-capacity 3.5 external hard drive in the world.
Note: For applications requiring military-grade shock protection, we offer the FastRestore SE with our Mobile DataVault 2LX, portable drive, which exceeds MIL-STD-810F transit drop test requirements. Contact Olixir at 408-719-0595, ext. 101 to learn more. |
| |
| 11. What is the size of the Mobile DataVault FastRestore SE and its portable drives? |
| |
The desktop chassis is: 9.60 x 6.50 x 2.15
At 1.40 x 4.45 x 7.5, the rugged portable drives included in this system are about the size of a VHS tape. They are 40 percent smaller than most popular 3.5 external hard drives, even though they are shock protected ! The portable drives can stand vertically or can be stacked, which is useful when storing the drives. |
 |
| |
| 12. How much capacity is available, and what does “250/500 mean”? |
| |
We offer several options of portable drive capacities with this system:
80/160 GB, 250/500 GB, 400/800 GB*.
You should interpret these capacities as native/compressed. Compression is typical, not guaranteed, and is achieved via software.
* This capacity is expected to be available in late November 2004 |
| |
| 13. How fast does this solution back up and restore data? |
| |
Blazing fast: The FastRestore SE transfers a Gigabyte in less than 50 seconds. Sustained transfer rates vary between 2030 MB/s depending on your host system's performance. |
| |
| 14. What interfaces is the Mobile DataVault FastRestore SE compatible with? |
