| 1. For
what applications can the Mobile DataVault 2LX be used? |
| |
The Mobile DataVault 2LX is useful for any application where portability is a concern. Our customers use this drive for mobile video surveillance, backup and disaster recovery, transporting medical images, and a variety of others. This drive offers military-grade shock protection (can survive 100 drops from 3 to 6 feet), so it is safe to transport almost anywhere. |
| |
| 2. What makes
the Mobile DataVault 2LX different than other portable drives? |
|
First, other portable hard drives do not typically meet military standards for shock protection. The Mobile DataVault 2LX exceeds the most challenging standard known, the MIL-STD-810F transit drop test, which requires the drive survive 26 drops at 4 feet in all angles on a hard surface. We've built the drive to survive up to 100 drops, with at least 30 coming from 6 feet. You will be hard pressed to find a more shock protected portable hard drive in the world.
The problem that we've solved is that hard disk drives are too fragile for being moved around. With other drives in the industry, users are often warned by the manufacturer or outside industry sources to minimize moving or bumping the drive. For instance, Independent Technology Services, Inc. states:
Rough handling accounts for more hard disk drive damage than all other factors combined.
In fact, most hard drives can't take even an inch of drop. Fujitsu Corporation included the following warning in a recent warranty statement regarding hard disk drives:
A drop onto a hard surface from as little as ¼-inch (6 mm) can cause defects on the surface of the drive, so extreme care must be exercised when handling disk product .
And many popular makers of external hard drives, such as Maxtor warn users:
Do not bump, jar, or drop the drive (5000DV manual).
Olixir's Mobile DataVault 2LX has eliminated this issue with fragility with its revolutionary shock protection. This drive offers military-grade protection compared to other portable drives and is among the most durable and reliable known high-capacity portable hard drives known in the world.
Even though this drive is shock protected, it is handheld and small about the size of a VHS tape and stands vertically or can be stacked.
Note: For applications requiring lower shock protection, Olixir offers the Mobile DataVault 3DX, which has up to 400 GB capacity and a lower price per Gigabyte.
Second, we back our drive with a three-year warranty compared to the typical one year that most large external drive makers offer. And, our warranty covers accidental drops.
Third, our drive offers amazing versatility. You can use it with Olixir's USB 2.0, Firewire, or Serial ATA cables, or plug it into our 5.25 docking bay, which makes it usable in rackmount units or as a removable drive in a server. The cables/docking bay can be used interchangeably because our drive has a universal interface, as shown here.

| 3. How
much shock protection does the Mobile DataVault 2LX offer? |
| |
The Mobile DataVault 2LX offers over 10,000G (2.0 ms) of shock protection. This drive exceeds the MIL-STD-810F transit drop test requirements of 26 4-foot drops on a hard surface. We have laboratory-tested this product to 100 drops from 3 to 6 feet! You will be hard pressed to find a more shock protected portable hard drive anywhere in the world! |
| |
| 4. Has
the shock protection been certified by a third party? |
| |
Yes, the Mobile DataVault 2LX has been certified by Met Laboratories as having exceeded the MIL-STD-810F transit drop. Please contact us if you would like a copy of this report. |
| |
| 5. What
is the size of the Mobile DataVault 2LX? Will it stand vertically? |
| |
At 1.40 x 4.45 x 7.50, the Mobile DataVault 2LX is handheld (about the size of a VHS tape). It can stand vertically or be stacked. |
| |
| 6. Why
does the Mobile DataVault 2LX look like the Mobile DataVault 3DX? What
are the differences in the two products? |
|
Both products use the same outer shell and electronic interface so that Olixir customers can use either product with the same interface cables or 5.25 docking bay, enabling interchangeable usage. Thus, the physical dimensions are the same. And, both are compatible with the same operating systems.
Differences between the Mobile DataVault 2LX and 3DX include:
- Both use completely different types of internal hard drives inside the Mobile DataVault 2LX uses a 2.5 laptop hard drive while the Mobile DataVault 3DX uses a 3.5 desktop hard drive. There is also a major difference in the internal shock protection method used for both products.
- The Mobile DataVault 2LX is a much more shock-protected product. It is intended for extreme environments, such as mobile video surveillance and military, and applications where transporting the drive routinely via mail carriers is necessary. The Mobile DataVault 3DX is perfect for applications such as backup and disaster recovery.
- The Mobile DataVault 3DX has 7200 RPM and the Mobile DataVault 2LX has 5400 RPM performance.
- The Mobile DataVault 3DX maximum capacity is 400 GB and the Mobile DataVault 2LX is 100 GB.
- The Mobile DataVault 3DX weighs just over 1 lb, while the Mobile DataVault 2LX weighs about 12.5 ounces.
- The Mobile DataVault 2LX is priced higher per Gigabyte because of its superior shock protection.

| 7. How
much capacity is available? |
| |
Choose from 20 GB to 100 GB. Contact us for available capacities. |
| |
| 8. What
does hot-swappable mean and is this drive hot-swappable? |
| |
Hot-swappable means that the drive can be plugged in and out of your host computer system, and be recognized by the system, without having to turn the host computer off. With servers, this is an especially important consideration.
All of our drives are hot-swappable, providing you use the USB 2.0, Firewire, of Serial ATA interface cables and a recent operating system version such as Windows 2000/XP.
The IDE interface option of the docking bay is not hot-swappable, but the USB 2.0, Firewire, or SATA options for the docking bay are hot-swappable. |
| |
| 9. How
fast does this drive transfer data? |
| |
Blazing fast: The Mobile DataVault 2LX transfers a Gigabyte in less than 40 seconds with our Serial-ATA cable. The theoretical maximum sustained transfer rate is 40 MB/s. With USB 2.0 or Firewire interface cables, the Mobile DataVault 2LX will transfer a Gigabyte in about 5060 seconds.
The internal drive has 5400 RPM/8 MB Cache. |
| |
| 10. Is
the Mobile DataVault 2LX usable with Firewire, USB 2.0, and Serial
ATA? |
| |
You can choose from USB 2.0, Firewire, or Serial ATA cables with this drive, or use it with a 5.25 docking bay. The docking bay options available are IDE, USB 2.0, Firewire, or Serial ATA. The drive even works interchangeably with different cables and/or the docking bay. |
| |
| 11. I
don't see a USB 2.0 or Firewire port at the back of the drive what
kind of interface does the Mobile DataVault 2LX have? |
|
To provide maximum versatility to end users, this drive uses a universal connector called Mini-Centronics rather than a standard USB 2.0 or Firewire connector like other drives. Click here to view the back of this drive with this interface.
To connect to your host computer, plug in the large end of our USB 2.0, Firewire, or SATA cables into this connector. This connector also allows the 2LX to be used as a removable drive solution using Olixir's 5.25 docking bay or desktop chassis plug in or eject the drive at a push of a button. Such a solution is ideal for rackmount configurations or use in enterprises in which frequent rotation of the drive is desirable.
There is no degradation in transfer rate with this connector. High-speed chips within the cable provide high-speed signal conversion to the protocol cable of your choice. |
 |
| |
| 12. What
operating systems is the Mobile DataVault 2LX compatible with? |
|
The drive offers plug-and-play operation with most recent operating systems including:

| |
| 13. Can
this external drive operate using Windows NT? |
| |
